Famster Instant Messaging

With Famster, you can keep in constant contact with your friends and family using our Instant Messaging service.  Once the other Famster sites administrators have approved your request, you'll be able to hold a full conversation online with any approved Famster user.

In order to use Famster Instant Messaging, a Famster administrator will need to create an account for you. If you are not the administrator of your Famster, please either build a Famster for your family or contact your Famster administrator and have them create a Famster IM user account for you.

Create a User

First, you'll need to create an account in the Famster IM Admin.

  1. Click
  2. Enter a Username,  Password.  Re-enter your password in Confirm Password.  If you do not want to log a history of the user's chats, uncheck Log This User's Chat.  If you change your mind, you can always set this to log all chats anytime after the user is added.
  3. Click Save

To begin Instant Messaging, you'll first need to add one or more fellow users as Buddies.  To keep the service as safe as possible, you are unable to instant message another user until you have been added to each others list of approved buddies.  There are two ways to add a Buddy: Sending a request to another Famster administrator or approving a request sent to you.

Request a Buddy
  1. Click your desired user to highlight it, then click Request Buddy
  2. Enter the Username and Famster Name for the Buddy you would like to add.  You may also enter a Message. When entering a message make sure to be as descriptive as possible so the other Famster administrator knows who the request is coming from. We will email your request to the administrator of the other Famster site and insert your message in the email.
  3. Once the other user approves your request, you will be able to start chatting.
Approve a Buddy Request
  1. While in the Famster IM admin, if you select a user you may see one or more Buddy Requests.
  2. Click Approve or Deny.
  3. If you approved the request, the user will be added to your Buddy List, and you'll be able to start chatting.

Once you have added one or more buddies, you are ready to get started!

Using the Famster IM Client
  1. Click Famster IM at the top of the screen.
  2. Enter your username and password.
  3. Double-click an online buddy to begin typing!
