How Passwords Work on Famster

Famster's dual layer password protection architecture puts you, the Famster administrator, in control of all of your family's valuable personal web content. Want to allow your Aunt Tilly to be able to view your private Blog? No problem!  Want to give your cousin Sal Write access to your Family tree?  No sweat! Your Famster can be set to make just about any component public or private.  To add a second layer of security we have armed your Famster with Read and Write access on a component by component basis.  Follow this brief tutorial to get started and learn how to get your family and friends dialed in to your Famster!

Setting Member Password for Friends and Family Member Access

Enter a Member password on the Admin > Security Center > Manage Passwords page to enable friends and family members to access the Member tab. Anyone you give this Member password to will be able to access the Member tab of your Famster and view any component that doesn't have an additional Read password enabled.

Inviting Someone to be a Member of your Famster

Enter a list of email addresses on the Admin > Invite Members page to have our system email your Members their special password and instructions on how to login.

Setting a File Upload Password

Enter a File Upload password on the Admin > Security Center > Manage Passwords page to enable file upload access to the File Cabinet component. Anyone you give the File Upload password to will be able to access the File Cabinet and upload files.  Uploaded files will automatically be marked "private" and will only be visible within the Member and Admin views of the File Cabinet.  You can review the uploaded files and decide which files you'd like to keep in your Famster and delete the rest.

Changing Your Admin Password

To change your Admin password, go to Admin > Security Center > Manage Passwords, enter a new password in the Admin Password field, and enter it again in the Re-enter Password field to ensure you entered it correctly.

Setting Read Access for a Component

Most components can be assigned Read privileges.  Anyone who knows the Read password for a component will be able to view that component.  To set the Read password, go to Admin > Security Center > Manage Components and click Edit next to the component you want to add a Read password to.  Click on the padlock and add the Read password.  Then direct your visitors to the component you want them to view.  If a Read password is set for a component, a password entry field will appear.  Enter the Read password and click Login.  The component the user has Read access to will automatically load.

Setting Write Access for a Component

Most components can be assigned Write privileges.  Anyone who knows the Write password for a component will be able to administer that component.  To set the Write password, go to Admin > Security Center > Manage Components and click on the Edit link next to the component you want to add a Write password to.  Click on the padlock and add the Write password.  Then direct your visitors to the component you want them to administer.  If a Write password is set for a component, a Component Edit link will appear in the top right corner of the component.  Click Edit and you will be taken to the login page.  From the Login Type drop down select Component Edit, enter the Write password and click Login.  You will automatically be taken back to the component you were in last and you will now be able to save changes to that component.
